Mr Layton's Farm on fire Wilburton
Farm Blaze, High Street, Wilburton
Neighbours turned to fire fighters at the weekend when they tried to contain the blaze which swept through agriculture buildings in Wilburton. The fire which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage was at the farm premises of Mr John Layton at 19 High Street, Wilburton.
Mr and Mrs Layton left home about 2.45p.m on Sunday afternoon and travelled to Cottenham for their granddaughter’s second birthday party and to attend her Sunday School anniversary service. The Layton family had been building up the business over 30 years and sold much of their produce from the premises in the High Street.
Among the Items lost in the fire were two tractors, a trailer, a garden tractor, a potato riddle, a manure spreader, two tonnes of old potatoes, seed potatoes, wooden trays and a quantity of other produce.
Firefighters from Sutton, Cottenham, Ely, Littleport and Cambridge attended the fire. They also appreciated all the help they had from their neighbours.
