Twentypence Bridge Wilburton
Memories of Mrs Goulty
Mrs Goulty had had experience of the characteristics of the fen rivers (which flow at a higher level than the fields which they drain) having spent her childhood beside the Old West River at Twentypence Wilburton.
There was only a fen drove leading up to the village and it took me a long time to walk up to the school. My Granddad kept the public house (demolished in 2002 to make way for houses by the marina). We lived in the White Cottage later owned by Eleanor Summerfield and Leonard Sachs of the musical fame.
Beer for the pub was fetched by horse and cart from Wilburton station and if I could get a lift home from school by a horse & cart, I thought was very lucky. I lived there until went into in service Cambridge. Employment for girls at this time in the early years of the 20th century were very limited.
A lot has been surmised about the name ”Twentypence”. It cost a 1d per person to cross to Cottenham and 2d to include a bike. One suggestion was that from Wilburton church to Cottenham return journey would cost 20d for two carts their horses and Wagoner’s but this was only an idea.
