After he retired Anthea took over the shop side of the business and he helped her for a few years. He was as welcoming to newcomers in the village as he was to those customers the he had known all his life. Then he diverted his attention to his garden at the bungalow and particularly beautiful display of flowers which brought pleasure to many. He also developed his carpentry skills to make bird tables and trellis work in his barn behind the house and enjoyed many hours cutting up would for the fire
. He enjoyed games of dominoes with friends at Stretham, Bakery Close ,Wardy Hill. He liked talking and visiting and had a wonderful gift of making people laugh and many people both old and young delighting in the stories from the past.
Many people often said that he should write a book or commit the tales to tape.
He was up right honest and valued what are called ’old fashioned ’virtues and took much pleasure from being with his extended family and wide circle of friends
